Why we feel uncomfortable looking for new mlm prospects.
Within network marketing its either you sell products or services or you build up a sales team of people who are looking for an extra income or more. Before we contact people and ask them if they want to join your organization we have to know who we should ask. This process of asking till supporting a new person into your team is called sponsoring. The person who asked you to join the business, sponsored you into the business. In fact: he/she recruited you because he/she might think that you have potential to grow into the business. You can ask anyone you might think is going to be a good team member to join your business. Even people you’ve just met. Its just like prospecting for minerals or gold. Instead you are looking for people. We call them mlm prospects.
Sponsoring or recruiting is one of the things that makes us feel uncomfortable within network marketing. Why is that?
Let us take a look how it works. There are several ways to sponsor people into your business.(rr6) One of the old ways is to make a list of all the people you know and give them a call.
For example: your sponsor says, “Call all your old classmates”. We get nervous and don’t dare to call. We’re afraid to call up our classmates and say something along the lines of, “Hey, that was a long time ago, must have been about 25 years. How are you? Are you open to additional income?”
Then we feel uncomfortable.
Another example: when we’re at a store and want to pay at the checkout, we think: “this cashier would be a good mlm prospect (rr5) for my business.” So we start our sales pitch by saying: “Do you believe in multiple income streams and a permanent income instead of a normal income?”
Then we feel uncomfortable.
Why?
Because our subconscious tells us that we haven’t built rapport with our mlm prospects. This means we don’t trust him/her and the mlm prospects don’t believe the great things we have to say.
What exactly is building rapport? It means a connection or relationship with a person in a way that there is mutual harmonius understanding and trust with a person or with a group of people. You have to build rapport to get into this situation of rapport.
It might start with finding things you have in common so you can show people that you are the same as them. People like to connect with people who are like them. Also the first step in communication is building rapport. If we start with a presentation of our mlm business without building rapport, we will definitely feel resistance from the mlm prospects.
We can use ice breakers (resources) to get things started. It mostly start with a comment or compliment and after that a question. Most people like it when you show interest. Most people like to talk about themselves because it makes them feel comfortable. If you ask them questions you give them the opportunity to talk about themselves. If they feel comfortable they might like you more and if they like you more they might trust you more so they are opening up in what you have to say or offer.
Therefor we can say that if you want to give a business presentation to someone you hardly know, building rapport is necessary. Our mlm prospects subconscious reacts in a certain way to certain words and actions and immediately decides whether he/she trusts us or not. So, as professionals, we need to master these first few seconds.
